Everyone knows that China is one of the most polluted countries in the world; such is the price of development, as many may say. But this superpower nation has found a way to counter its great air pollution. The solution is to turn its smog into diamonds.

This isn’t a joke. The Chinese have discovered a method that can actually convert toxic smoke in the air into the world’s most precious stone. So how do they turn their rubbish into riches?

Dutch inventor Daan Roosegaarde has introduced towers dubbed “Smog Free Towers.” At around 7 metres tall, these towers suck in the polluted air. This air contains high amounts of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, both of which are Greenhouse Gases and harmful for animals. By keeping the air under pressure for around half an hour, these towers compress the carbon in the air, to form diamonds.

These diamonds are then sold to the public. What makes this idea even more revolutionary is that the money raised from selling them goes into the production of more Smog Free Towers. Meanwhile, the air is released into parks and playgrounds, clean and free from harmful toxins.

What could be better than turning your downfall into a resource? China has finally answered our prayers regarding the environment, with an invention that not only cleans our air and lungs, but also pays for itself! Maybe there’s hope left for our world still.
